With its unique appearance, your guests will be impressed to see this in your kitchen garden. When used to create a beautiful sauce which bursts with lemon and olive flavour, Capers make the perfect companion to a beautifully cooked steak.
This perennial plant is also ideal for pickling in vinegar for use in antipasti or pizzas.
They are rather pretty and aromatic plants but they do require dry heat and good sunlight to flourish and need to be kept in the relatively warm temperatures (above -5c). In the UK, bring them inside in the winter and treat them as a greenhouse or conservatory pot plant.
Mature caper bushes can grow three feet high and spread four or five feet.

Approximate 120 seeds.
Sow from March-June.
Must be grown indoors in a greenhouse or conservatory.
Please note that germination can take from 3 months.
They require dry heat and strong sunlight to flourish.
In the north, bring the plants inside during the winter or grow them in pots in a greenhouse.
Instructions for growing:
• The seeds are dormant so they needed to be soaked in warm water for 24 hours. • Put seeds in a wet towel, seal in a plastic bag and leave in the refrigerator for 6-8 weeks. • Then remove and soak again in warm water for 24 hours. • After this you can plant the seeds 1cm deep in a mixture of potting soil 50%, perlite 25%, and sand 25%. • Put 4-5 seeds per pot. • The seeds should germinate in 3-4 weeks once they are 10cm tall, choose the strongest plant and remove the others from the pot by cutting them off in the pot with scissors. This is to avoid disturbing the remaining strongest plant. • When transplanting, disturb the root as little as possible. • After transplanting, keep the plant protected from the elements ideally under cover on a warm widow sill or heated greenhouse. Keep in a warm and sunny spot.
While not the easiest plant to grow, it is worth the effort to harvest and make your own capers.
